license plate faq
1. Why should I get an Appalachian license tag?
The Appalachian license tag is a great way to show your Appalachian pride and support the Alumni Memorial Scholarship. It's also been used as a networking tool and conversation starter in parking lots across the nation.
2. Do I have to be an Alumnus to get one?
No. To apply for an Appalachian license plate, you need the name and address of the owner, as stated on the Certificate of Title, proof of insurance and no outstanding property taxes on your vehicle. You can stop by your local DMV, get a written application from the McKinney Alumni Center, or you can apply online.
3. What does the Appalachian license plate support?
The Appalachian license plate supports the Alumni Memorial Scholarship, which benefits children of Appalachian Alumni. The $2000 scholarships are renewable for four years based on academic achievement. Learn about past recipients here.
4. I just graduated. How do I benefit from the Alumni Memorial Scholarship?
True, you might not see the direct benefits of the Alumni Memorial Scholarship (AMS) for another 18-25 years, but it is a beneficial fund to many Appalachian families. Since its creation in 1988, more than 60 scholarships have been funded to children of Appalachian Alumni. The scholarships, which are renewable for four years based on academic achievement, are completely funded through the Licene Tag program. To learn more about AMS, click here.
5. Where can I get my tag?
The plates are available through any DMV office in North Carolina. They cost an additional $25 on top of the regular registration fee. Of that amount, $15 comes back to Appalachian's Alumni Memorial Scholarship Fund. For another $30, the plate can be personalized with a special message, such as your class year. (You can check the availability of special messages at the DMV website).
6. I live outside of North Carolina. Can I get an ASU License Plate here?
That depends on your current state of residence. Virginia is the only state currently offers an Appalachian specialized plate, although the University receives no funding from plate sales.
7. Why can't I get an ASU License Plate in my state?
DMVs require a significant financial commitment, or a pre-purchase commitment from at least 500 drivers, before they will begin to produce one. Many states simply don't allow speciality plates from out-of-state schools. Check back for updates on availability.
8. Is there a limitation to what I can put on the plate?
For an additional $30, you can personalize your Appalachian License Plate, subject to availability. If you order an Appalachian tag and want to personalize the plate with 2 letters and 2 numbers after the A, one of the letters must be G, O, U, I, Q. Otherwise, it conflicts with another tag series that the DMV has in place.
